Usually, after first week of radiation therapy to head and or neck, the saliva production decreases and continues during the treatment.

Frequently the salivary glands localized in the upper cheeks close to ears are more victim than other salivary glands.

If the salivary glands were directly touched by radiation therapy, the recovery of saliva will be partial and occurs after one year after.

How to minimize dry mouth

* It is better at least four times a day to clean the mouth and teeth.

* Use some solution of salt and baking soda (add 1/2 teaspoon salt to 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in one cup of warm water)

* Avoid all substance containing some sugar.

* Drink a lot of water to diminish dryness.

* Fluoride gel must be applied at bed time once a days mainly after cleaning the teeth.

* Always floss once a day and use rather fluoride toothpaste during brushing.

We encourage you to floss and brush you teeth,furthermore to use oral rinse. Children brushing teeth represent good habit and parents have to encourage.

At least,see your dentist every six months for a regular clean up to preserve a good oral hygiene.
