Nowadays people talk about tooth decay like disease of civilization.
We can ask ourselves why such designation?
Normally in studies of particular races of people and in comparison of primitive and civilized peoples, it has been shown that dental caries incidence (new cases) increase with the development of civilization and standards of living.
People seek to reduce things at more simple than possible. Now and then, they change the physical and chemical qualities of their diet.
To minimize the incidence of caries, many begin to use fluoride in certain products.
I-Physical qualities changes
In colonial times the incidences of tooth cavities were normally lower than that found present day in United States. While that time people had a diet more abrasive that means they fed with hard food.
As advantages, there were less food debris to remain on the teeth and that makes arrive a greater amount of saliva in mouth.
The latter helps wash away food debris and acts indirectly on the protection of the teeth.
Therefore the civilized diet uses rather refined food, full in carbohydrates (cakes, candy, caramel…), what exposes the tooth to cavities.
II- Chemical qualities changes
The disaccharides or saccharoses found in sugar cane, sugar beet is more harmful than the polysaccharides represented by starches.
Generally more the sugar is refined more it is harmful for the teeth. So, the incidence of tooth cavity is directly related to the amount sugar intake
Causes
1. Certain groups of food that has a higher level of carbohydrate and presents a greater adherence to teeth. Such as Jam, Cake……..
2. The administration of medicine per OS: sweet medicine especially syrup or sweet tablets.
3. The atropines, psychotropic and radiations can diminish the amount of saliva in the mouth what is bad for teeth.
Signs

3. Brush regularly your teeth tree time a day, especially before bed.
4. The brushing may last tree minutes.
5. Floss once a day to take off all debris.
6. Regularize any bad position of teeth or deep grooves.
7. The use of fluoride (1mg/l) in drinking water, reinforces outer layer of enamel and prevent carbohydrates from converting into acids to attack teeth.
Treatment
1. In the case where the caries doesn’t attack the pulp yet but situated on the side of tooth or above, the carious enamel and dentin must be removed and replaced with some type of filling material.
2. If the pulp is infected the choice will be the root canal to prevent all complication.
The teeth as all of other body parts deserve to be protected. A good smile is also a sign of good health. Unfortunately our natural system can not fight thoroughly all factors causing tooth cavities.
